Materials & Prep

Prepare one ten-frame with 10 counters already in it, a set of loose counters, and numeral cards 11–19 for teacher modeling. Each pair needs one ten-frame and 20 counters; each student needs a small whiteboard and a marker for the opening. Place counters and cards where partners can reach them quickly. No special technology is needed.

0–8min

Gather and model

Show me: Hold up one full ten-frame in one hand and 4 loose counters in the other. Say only the word, “fourteen.” Ask every student to write that number on a whiteboard and hold it up. Do not say yet whether any answer is right.

ConfrontWrite on the board both numbers the class actually produced, which will usually include 14 and 41. Point to them and ask, “These cannot both be fourteen. Which one matches what I am holding?” Students turn and tell a partner which they chose. Accept both answers for now and leave both on the board.

ConnectSay, “The word fourteen says four first, so writing 41 makes sense from the word. We write what the groups show instead.” Hold up the full frame: “This is 1 ten.” Hold up the loose counters: “These are 4 ones. Ten first, ones next. We write 14.” Cross out 41 only now, after the groups have shown why.

Think aloudKeep the same full ten-frame and change the loose counters to 7. Say, “I hear seven-teen, and I might want to write 71. I look at the groups instead. One full frame, so I write 1. Seven loose counters, so I write 7. The number is 17.”

Check for understandingShow the full ten-frame and 3 loose counters. Students write the number on their whiteboards and hold them up. Ask several students to explain, “I know it is 13 because I see ten and ones.”

8–24min

Build with a partner

TransitionPartners quietly collect one ten-frame, counters, and a small stack of numeral cards. Partner A draws a card, builds the number, and says the number. Partner B touches the frame and the extra counters while saying, “ ten and ones.” Switch roles after each card.

ModelDemonstrate one partner turn with 16. Draw 16, place 10 counters in the frame and 6 beside it, then say, “Sixteen is 1 ten and 6 ones. I write 16, not 61.”

ScaffoldKeep the sentence frame visible: “ is 1 ten and ones.” Students who need support first build every number with the ten-frame, then point to the ten before counting the extra ones. Accept pointing, showing counters, or saying the words as a complete response.

CirculateAsk, “How many full groups of ten do you see? How many are left? Which digit tells about the ten?” Watch for students who write 41 for 14 or 81 for 18. Have them build the number again, touch the full ten-frame first, and say, “Ten first, ones next” before writing the numeral.

Short problem solving: Give each student a turn to independently build one called number, such as 12, 15, or 19, while the partner checks the model. The builder must show the ten and ones, say the number, and point to the matching numeral card.

ExtensionStudents ready for a challenge build 14 and 18, then explain which has more ones and how they know both still have exactly one ten. They may also choose a teen numeral card and ask a partner to build it without showing the card.

24–30min

Share and check

Show me: Call out 11, 14, and 19 one at a time. Students hold up one finger for the ten and use their other hand to show the number of ones, or point to the matching amount on their ten-frame. Observe whether each student represents one ten and the correct ones.

ConfrontReturn to 14 and 41, the two numbers the class wrote at the start. Ask, “Which one matches one ten and four ones? How can your model prove it?” Let students turn and tell a partner. Emphasize that the word “fourteen” begins with “four,” but the written number must match the groups: 1 ten and 4 ones is 14.

Close: Invite two students to complete orally: “A teen number is made of ten and ones.” Finish with 17: students say, “17 is 1 ten and 7 ones,” while pointing to the ten-frame and the seven extra counters.
