Materials & Prep (before class)
Gather 1 foam ball or yarn ball per pair, floor spots or poly spots, cones, and four large targets such as wall targets or hoops. Set up parallel throwing lanes in the gym with a clear retrieval line. Mark a throwing line and place targets 10–15 feet away. Review local procedures for safe throwing, spacing, and retrieving equipment.
Opening: Predict and try
Ask“If two people throw with the same arm, but one steps with the same-side foot and the other steps with the opposite foot, which throw will usually be stronger and more accurate? Why?” Students silently point to a choice, then briefly explain their prediction to a partner.
Have students stand behind a throwing line with a ball. On the signal, they make one gentle throw toward a target using their natural throwing arm, first stepping with the same-side foot. They retrieve only on the signal. Tell students to remember how balanced and accurate that throw felt. Do not correct the technique yet. Say, “Today we will test your prediction and learn three parts that make an overhand throw more controlled.”
Model the throw: Three parts
DisplayName the three cues: “sideways stance, opposite foot, reach and follow through.” For a right-handed thrower, the left foot steps forward. For a left-handed thrower, the right foot steps forward.
ModelFace sideways to the target with the non-throwing shoulder toward it, feet about shoulder-width apart, and the ball held near the ear. Step toward the target with the foot opposite the throwing hand. Rotate the hips and shoulders, bring the arm forward, release the ball in front of the body, and let the throwing arm continue across the body while the back foot comes forward naturally.
Think aloud“I am right-handed, so I begin with my left shoulder toward the target. My left foot is the foot that steps. I do not reach only with my arm. I step, rotate, and then let my arm finish. The common mistake is stepping with the right foot. That turns my body away from the target and makes it harder to stay balanced.”
CompareDemonstrate one same-side-foot throw and one opposite-foot throw from the same distance. Ask students to watch the thrower’s balance and direction, not just the distance. Students identify which throw finishes more balanced and points more toward the target.
Guided practice: Build the pattern
ScaffoldPlace a floor spot for the starting foot and a second spot one step closer to the target. Students first hold the ball still and rehearse the motion without throwing: sideways stance, opposite-foot step, arm action, and follow-through. Partners say “stance, step, finish” as the thrower moves. Students may continue with a shorter step or a larger, softer ball if needed.
Students then throw foam balls at targets from the marked line. The thrower freezes after the follow-through. The partner checks only two cues at first: “Did the opposite foot step?” and “Did the arm finish toward the target?” Switch roles after three throws.
Check for understandingCall “freeze” after a rehearsal. Students show their throwing stance and point to the foot that steps. Ask, “If your left hand throws, which foot steps?” Students answer by pointing or saying “right.” Correct and rehearse any same-side responses before adding distance.
Look forStudents who step with the opposite foot but face the target squarely should return to a sideways stance. Students who use only their arm should slow down and exaggerate the step and hip turn before throwing again.
Partner practice: Throw, observe, coach
ExplainIn each round, the thrower makes three throws, the observer watches one cue at a time, and then partners switch. The observer gives feedback in this format: “I saw ; next throw, try .” Feedback must name a visible action, such as “I saw your left foot step when you threw right-handed. Next throw, finish with your arm pointing toward the target.”
Have students complete three rounds. Round 1 focuses on stance. Round 2 focuses on the opposite-foot step. Round 3 focuses on follow-through and accuracy. After each round, partners move back one small step only if both can throw safely and remain in control. Partners retrieve on the teacher’s signal, walking outside the throwing lanes.
CirculatePrompt students with “Which foot is opposite your throwing hand?” and “Where does your arm finish?” For students who need more challenge, require the observer to connect the cue to the result: “Your follow-through pointed left, and the ball went left.”
ExtensionStudents who consistently show all three cues choose a target zone and try to hit it three times while keeping the same technique. They may increase distance only if their stance, step, and follow-through remain controlled.
Closing check: Show and coach
ChallengeEach pair completes a final assessment. The thrower makes two throws from the line while the partner uses this checklist: sideways stance, opposite-foot step, arm reaches and releases forward, and follow-through points toward the target. The observer identifies one cue the thrower demonstrated and gives one specific next-step suggestion. Partners then switch roles.
Exit ticketBefore leaving, each student completes the sentence orally or on a small slip: “For my throwing hand, the opposite foot is the foot. My partner’s useful feedback was .” The teacher listens for the correct opposite foot and feedback that names an observable throwing action. Students who are unable to write may point to the correct foot and give or demonstrate the feedback.
