Materials & Prep

Gather red, yellow, and blue tempera or acrylic paint, palettes, water cups, brushes, paper, paper towels, and a blank color-wheel handout for each student. Display a completed color wheel and prepare three recipe cards: red + yellow = orange, yellow + blue = green, blue + red = violet. Use equal brushloads for consistent comparisons. Remind students of classroom paint and cleanup procedures before beginning.

Opening

Display a familiar color wheel without naming the intermediate colors. Ask students to point to the two colors directly beside orange, green, and violet, then predict which primary colors must be combined to make each. Students may use the wheel they memorized last year, but do not ask them to mix yet. Have students commit to one prediction by writing or pointing to two colors for each result.

ConnectThe successful reasoning was noticing that colors on the wheel have neighbors and that the colors between two known colors come from those neighbors. Today, students will test that idea with paint and extend it to colors between a primary and a secondary color.

7–16min

Direct instruction

DisplayShow the completed wheel and identify the three primary colors: red, yellow, and blue. Define secondary colors as colors made by mixing two primary colors. Orange sits between red and yellow, green between yellow and blue, and violet between blue and red.

Worked exampleMix one equal brushload of red with one equal brushload of yellow. The result is orange, so place the orange swatch between red and yellow. Think aloud: I first find the two colors I am mixing on the wheel. Then I find the space halfway between them. That space predicts the result's location. The common mistake is mixing a color with a non-neighbor and then placing the result wherever it looks attractive. The wheel's neighboring relationship, not personal preference, determines the starting prediction.

ExplainA tertiary color is made by mixing one primary with the secondary color next to it. Red plus orange makes red-orange, yellow plus orange makes yellow-orange, yellow plus green makes yellow-green, blue plus green makes blue-green, blue plus violet makes blue-violet, and red plus violet makes red-violet. These colors sit between their two ingredient colors. Use equal brushloads at first, understanding that paint pigments may make the result look slightly different.

Check for understandingBefore any paint is used, ask students to hold up or point to the recipe for yellow-green and show where it belongs on the wheel. Then ask, “Would blue plus orange make a tertiary color? Why or why not?” Listen for the idea that orange is not next to blue on the wheel.

Guided practice

ModelOn the board, draw six empty spaces between the primary and secondary colors. Mix yellow and blue to make green, then mix yellow and green to make yellow-green. Place and label both swatches while narrating: I use yellow and its neighboring secondary, green. Since yellow is the stronger primary in this recipe, the color should remain closer to yellow than to green, even though the exact paint result can vary.

Have studentsIn pairs, use the recipe cards and primary paints to mix orange, green, and violet. For each mixture, students first point to the predicted location on the wheel, then make a swatch and compare it with the prediction. Partners take turns as mixer and checker. The checker asks, “What are the two ingredients?” and “Where should this color sit?”

ScaffoldProvide a visual recipe strip showing each ingredient with a small painted dot, an arrow, and the target space on the wheel. Students who need support may begin with only one secondary recipe, then use that result to make one tertiary color. Offer the sentence frame, “I mixed and . The result belongs between and because those colors are neighbors.”

28–40min

Independent work or discussion

Students complete a personal color wheel with three secondary and six tertiary swatches. They mix each color, label it, and place it between the two colors used. Before mixing each tertiary color, they lightly circle its predicted location and write the recipe beside it.

ConfrontPause after students make one tertiary color and ask them to compare two predictions. A color does not belong in a space merely because it looks pleasing there. If the recipe is blue plus green, the swatch must sit between blue and green, even if the paint appears more blue or more green.

ExtensionStudents create one additional mixture using unequal amounts, such as two brushloads of yellow and one of green. They place it closer to yellow, label the recipe, and explain how changing the amount shifts the color's position within the same neighboring section of the wheel. Circulate and check that students are predicting before painting rather than copying after the fact.

40–45min

Closing

Exit ticketStudents complete three prompts without using paint: 1. Name the two paints that make orange. 2. Name a tertiary color made with blue and green and state where it sits. 3. Explain why red plus yellow-orange belongs between red and orange rather than between red and violet. Students may answer in writing, with a labeled sketch, or by pointing and explaining orally. Collect the wheel and exit ticket as evidence that students can both mix the colors and explain their locations.
