Materials & Prep

  • Drawing paper, pencils, rulers, erasers, and optional colored pencils.
  • Before class, draw or project two quick road scenes: one with building edges correctly meeting one vanishing point and one with edges pointing to several places. Leave board space for a 7-minute live demo.

Opening

0–5 min

DisplayShow the two road scenes without labels. Ask: “If you walked down each street, which one would feel like it keeps going far away? What visual evidence makes you think so?” Students point or hold up 1 or 2, then give one reason to a partner.

ConfrontCollect two reasons and circle the converging edges in the more convincing image. Tell students that artists make depth by choosing one spot where receding lines appear to meet. The puzzle is why parallel street edges can look as if they meet: as things move farther away, they look smaller and closer together, like railroad tracks seen from far down the line.

Direct instruction

5–13 min

DefineA horizon line is eye level. A vanishing point is one point on that horizon line where lines going away from us appear to meet. In one-point perspective, every receding edge in this street scene aims at the same point.

ModelAt the board, work on a landscape sheet and narrate only these steps: “1. I draw a horizon line across the upper middle. 2. I place one dot near the center, my vanishing point. 3. I draw two light lines from the bottom corners to the dot. These are the road edges. 4. I add a sidewalk edge from each lower side to the same dot. 5. I make a tall building rectangle on the left foreground. The top and bottom edges that go back must travel to the dot, then I close the far side with a vertical line.” Add a shorter building on the right using the same process, then add two horizontal windows on the front face and receding window edges aimed at the dot.

Think aloud“The common mistake is aiming lines at the middle of the page or at a nearby building. I stop and trace each receding line with my ruler: does it hit my one dot? If not, I erase before adding detail.” Briefly draw one incorrect roof edge that misses the dot, extend it to show it misses, and replace it.

EmphasizeVertical edges stay vertical. Horizontal edges facing us stay horizontal. Only edges that move away from us go to the vanishing point.

Guided practice

13–23 min

Have studentsOn scrap paper or the back of their drawing paper, make the horizon line, one vanishing-point dot, and road edges with the teacher, pausing after each step. They then add one building rectangle on either side.

Check for understandingProject or point to four sample lines: a building’s vertical corner, a front-facing window top, a sidewalk edge moving away, and a lamppost top moving away. Ask students to show one finger if the line should be vertical, two if horizontal, and three if it should go to the vanishing point. Re-model any line that receives mixed responses.

Turn and talkPartners use the sentence frame, “This line should because it is .” They check that each other’s receding building edges reach the same dot.

ScaffoldKeep the three-rule reminder visible: vertical = up/down; horizontal = side to side; receding = to the dot. Students who need a defined entry point may trace the teacher’s road-and-sidewalk setup from the board onto their own page, then choose and construct their own buildings.

Independent work

23–45 min

StudentsCreate a simple street scene on drawing paper. Required features: one horizon line, one clearly marked vanishing point, a road or sidewalk leading to it, at least two buildings, and at least three details such as doors, windows, signs, trees, cars, or lampposts. Students draw construction lines lightly first, then darken only the finished edges.

CirculateFirst check the vanishing point and road before students add details. Ask, “Show me one line that recedes. Where does it end?” Give quick feedback: “Keep this vertical,” “Extend this edge to the dot,” or “Your front wall can stay flat because it faces us.”

MisconceptionIf a student says every line must go to the point, have them compare a vertical lamppost with a sidewalk edge. Ask which one moves away into space, then have them correct only the receding edge. Reinforce that perspective is judged by whether the drawing creates convincing space, not by whether it looks photorealistic or matches someone else’s design.

ExtensionAdd a cross street, repeated windows that become smaller toward the vanishing point, or a sign, awning, or car whose receding edges also meet the same vanishing point. Students may place the vanishing point off center and explain how that changes the view.

Closing

45–50 min

Exit ticketOn the bottom margin or a sticky note, students draw a tiny horizon line, one vanishing point, and a box-shaped building with two receding edges correctly aimed at the point. They circle the vanishing point and write one sentence: “In my street scene, lines that move away from me go to .” Collect as students clean up; use the drawings to group students for the next perspective work session.
