Read measurements on a standard tape measure accurately to the nearest sixteenth of an inch and record them using correct inch-and-fraction notation.

Materials & Prep

Prepare one tape measure for each pair, six measurement cards labeled A–F, six clearly marked shop objects or board edges, pencils, and a recording sheet with columns for object, whole inches, sixteenths, and final measurement. Mark these actual lengths on scrap wood or measurement strips: 7 3/8 inches, 12 5/16 inches, 18 11/16 inches, 23 7/16 inches, 31 15/16 inches, and 9 1/16 inches. Confirm the shop’s procedures for carrying, retracting, and sharing tape measures before class.

0–7min

Opening

Display a gap between two boards that is 8 inches and 3/8 inch wide. Do not show the tape measure markings yet. Ask students to predict whether an 8-inch board, a 9-inch board, or a board that is just over 8 inches will fit the gap. Students may use direct observation and their existing knowledge of whole-inch measurements. Have them point to or hold up their choice, then test the choices against the gap.

ConnectThe 8-inch board leaves a visible gap, while the 9-inch board is too long. The board just over 8 inches fits because the extra space matters. Explain that this is the problem caused by rounding every measurement to the nearest inch: a cut can be close in a notebook but still fail in the build. The smaller marks on a tape measure let us name that extra space precisely.

7–17min

Direct instruction

DisplayOn a large tape or projected image, identify the numbered inch marks and the 16 equal spaces between consecutive inch marks. State that each smallest space is 1/16 inch. The marks count spaces, not the number of marks: after 5 inches, the first small space is 5 1/16, the second is 5 2/16, and so on.

Think aloudModel reading the marked length 7 3/8 inches. First locate the last whole-inch number before the endpoint, 7. Then count the spaces after 7: 1/16, 2/16, 3/16. Record 7 3/16 if the endpoint is on the third space. Then correct the deliberately shown endpoint at 7 6/16 by counting six spaces and simplifying to 7 3/8. Emphasize the common error: 3/8 is not the third mark. It equals 6/16, so it is the sixth space after the whole inch.

Worked exampleRead 18 11/16 inches. The endpoint is past 18, so write 18 first. Count eleven spaces after 18, not eleven marks and not the nearest inch. The result is 18 11/16 inches. Demonstrate keeping the tape flat, aligning the hook with the starting edge, and reading at the far edge.

17–30min

Guided practice

Have students work in pairs at assigned locations. One student holds the tape measure and the other records, then they switch after each reading. Use cards A–C first: 7 3/8 inches, 12 5/16 inches, and 18 11/16 inches. Students must write the whole-inch number, count the sixteenths, and record the complete measurement before moving.

ScaffoldGive students a small reference strip showing one inch divided into 16 spaces and the sequence 1/16, 2/16, 3/16, 4/16, 5/16, 6/16, 7/16, 8/16. Provide the sentence frame, “The last whole inch is __. I counted __ spaces, so the measurement is __.”

Check for understandingStop after the first reading and have every student point to the whole-inch part and show the number of spaces with fingers or on the recording sheet. Ask, “If the endpoint is six spaces past 7 inches, what should you write?” Look for 7 6/16 or 7 3/8, not 7 6/8 and not 8 inches. Correct errors before releasing students to the next card.

30–45min

Independent work or discussion

Students individually read cards D–F at three different shop locations: 23 7/16 inches, 31 15/16 inches, and 9 1/16 inches. They record each measurement without help, then compare with a partner and remeasure any disagreement. Require students to explain one reading by naming the last whole inch and the number of sixteenth spaces.

ConfrontAsk students to decide whether a cut recorded as 24 inches is acceptable for the 23 7/16-inch measurement. Have them compare the two lengths on the tape and state the difference, 9/16 inch. Connect this directly to the class’s earlier cuts that did not fit.

ExtensionStudents measure a fourth object, record its exact sixteenth measurement, and identify whether rounding it to the nearest inch would make the piece too long or too short. They then explain which error would be more damaging in a fitting task and why.

45–50min

Closing

Exit ticketWithout partner assistance, students read two displayed tape-measure endpoints: 14 5/16 inches and 26 13/16 inches. For each, write the measurement to the nearest sixteenth and show the count of spaces after the whole-inch number. Then answer, “Why can rounding 26 13/16 inches to 27 inches cause a fitting problem?” Collect the ticket as the accuracy check. A student meets the objective by correctly recording both readings and explaining the fit consequence. Students who miss a reading remeasure one teacher-selected strip before leaving.
