Materials & Prep
Gather pairs of classroom objects with different lengths, such as a pencil and a crayon, two craft sticks, or two strips of paper. Mark a clear start line on each table with tape. Place two strips of paper at the front, one already lined up at the same starting point and one offset. No special materials are needed beyond these objects and tape.
Look and predict
ShowPlace a long strip and a short strip with their left ends together. Ask, “Which one reaches farther? How do you know?” Have students point to the one that reaches farther and say, “The is longer.” Then offset the same strips so their ends do not match. Ask students to predict again, accepting their first thinking.
ConnectSay, “You looked at which strip reached farther. When the ends are not together, our eyes can trick us. Mathematicians make a fair comparison by putting one end of each object at the same starting place.” Introduce longer as reaching farther from the same start and shorter as not reaching as far.
Model and try together
Think aloudPut the ends of a pencil and crayon on the taped start line. Say, “I will not line up the middle. I will line up one end. I check that both ends touch the start line. Now I look at the other ends. The pencil reaches farther, so the pencil is longer. The crayon does not reach as far, so the crayon is shorter.”
ConfrontDeliberately line up the wrong ends and say, “The crayon looks longer now.” Ask, “Is this a fair comparison? What should I fix?” Have students show with a hand signal or point to the end that belongs on the start line. Re-line up the objects correctly and revise the statement.
Check for understandingGive two students a pair of objects. Ask one student to place them at the start line and the other to point to the longer object. Ask, “How do you know?” Listen for “the ends start together” and “it reaches farther.”
Partner compare
TransitionPartners collect one pair of objects, walk to a marked table, and take turns being the placer and the checker. Keep each turn brief.
Have studentsPlace both objects with one end on the start line, point to the longer object, and tell a partner, “The is longer. The is shorter.” The checker touches the two starting ends and says, “Same start,” before confirming the comparison. Partners switch roles with a new pair.
ScaffoldKeep the taped start line visible and add a small colored dot to the end students should place on it. Model the sentence with gestures: point to the start line and say, “Same start,” then sweep a hand toward the farther end and say, “Longer.” Accept pointing, signing, or a one-word answer before inviting the full sentence.
Look forWatch for students lining up the middle or the wrong ends. Stop and ask, “Show me the end that starts. Do both ends touch the line?” Have the student reset the objects and compare again.
ExtensionInvite a ready student to choose two objects that look close in length, compare them carefully, and explain why looking at the aligned ends gives a fair answer.
Come back together
Show me: Hold up two final objects. Invite students to tell a partner which is longer and which is shorter, then have everyone point to the longer object. Call on one or two students to demonstrate placing the objects at the start line.
Close: Ask, “What must we do before we decide which object is longer?” Students respond orally or with motions: “Line up one end,” or “Same start.” Finish with, “When one object reaches farther from the same start, it is longer. The other is shorter.”
