Materials & Prep

  • Numeral cards 6, 7, 8, 9, 10
  • One set of 10 counters per pair and a ten-frame mat per pair
  • Teacher-made dot cards showing 1–5 in familiar dice and ten-frame patterns
  • Five floor or board spaces labeled 6–10, placed left to right

Gather and model

0–9 min

Ask“I dropped 8 counters on the rug. They are all spread out. How can we prove there are 8 without losing our place?” Have children show fingers for their prediction: count as they see them, or move them while counting.

ModelScatter 8 counters. Say, “I know the counting words to 20, but the words only help if each counter gets one number. I will touch one counter and slide it into my ten-frame as I say one number: 1, 2, 3...” Continue through 8. Think aloud: “The tricky part is not saying the numbers. The tricky part is making sure I did not count this counter twice or skip one. The filled spaces show me there are 8.” Point to the numeral 8 and place it beside the mat.

MisconceptionQuickly point across the scattered counters while saying 1–8, deliberately pointing to one twice. Ask, “Did I prove there are 8?” Children signal thumbs down. Clarify: “Rote counting is saying number words. Counting objects means one number word for each object.”

ShowFlash a dot card with 3 dots in a familiar pattern for two seconds. Ask, “How many did you see? Do not count.” Take several responses, then reveal it. Explain: “When a small group is arranged in a pattern we know, our eyes can recognize it quickly.” Repeat with 2, 4, and 5.

Show me: Display 7 counters in a scattered arrangement. Children air-touch and count with the teacher. Listen for one number word per counter.

Partner counting and number path

9–22 min

TransitionPartners move to a table, take one counter cup and one ten-frame, then sit shoulder to shoulder.

Have studentsPartner A scatters 6–10 counters while Partner B takes counters one at a time, places each in the ten-frame, and counts aloud. Together they choose the matching numeral card. Switch roles for three rounds. Each counter represents one object in the group; each ten-frame space holds one counter.

Prompt“How do you know your last number tells how many?” Expected: “All the counters are in the frame, and I counted each one once.”

Check for understandingStop after the first round. Hold up a scattered set of 9 counters. Ask each pair to show the matching numeral card and explain, “We know it is 9 because...” Observe whether children organize or touch objects one at a time rather than restarting or double-counting.

Have studentsGive each pair numeral cards 6–10. Call out a quantity, such as “Make 7.” Partners count 7 counters into a ten-frame, place the 7 card beside it, then place it on the shared left-to-right number path. Repeat for 6, 10, 8, and 9 until the path reads 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Have the class walk a finger along the path and chorally count forward.

ScaffoldGive children who lose track a “counted” space, the ten-frame, and the spoken stem, “I touched ; now I move it.” Stand beside them for the first two objects, then fade the prompt. For dot cards, begin with 1–3 in dice patterns and let children match the card to fingers before naming it.

ExtensionGive ready partners two dot cards, such as 2 and 3. Ask, “Without counting every dot, how many altogether? How did you see it?” Invite them to identify a missing number on the path: “6, 7, __, 9, 10.”

Number detectives

22–27 min

Center: Keep pairs together. Place one dot card face down and one scattered collection of 6–10 counters at each table. Partners take turns as the detective. The detective flips the dot card, names the small group without counting, then counts and matches the scattered collection to its numeral card using the ten-frame if needed. The partner checks by watching for one touch or move per object.

CirculateAsk, “Did you recognize the dots or count them?” and “What did you do so you would not count one twice?” Reflash a dot card for children who counted and invite them to notice its familiar pattern.

Come back together

27–30 min

AskFlash a 4-dot card. Children show the quantity on fingers immediately and say the number together. Then display 10 scattered counters and three numeral cards, 8, 9, and 10. Children point to the correct card after silently tracking how they would organize and count the objects.

Partner talk: Each child tells a partner one way to count scattered objects carefully and names the next number after 8. Listen for “move/touch each one once” and “9.” Celebrate revision: “We can say many number words, and we can also prove how many objects we have.”
